In November 2008, Music Center Frits Philips in Eindhoven, the Netherlands,

will again host the Tromp International Music Competition and Festival,

in this edition once again dedicated to the string quartet. It is my honour

to be Chairman of the International Jury which further includes

Ida Bieler (Heine Quartet),

Anner Bijlsma (L'archibudelli),

Nicholas Corti (Amati String Quartet),

Mary Rowell (Ethel Quartet),

Radim Sedmidubsky (Skampa Quartet) and

Andrew Watkinson (Endellion String Quartet).

21 string quartets from 10 countries have applied for participation in Tromp 2008.

After a first round, judicated via CD recordings, the quartets will further compete

from November 16-22 in Eindhoven. Steve Martland has composed the obilgatory

work for the final round, November 22, for string quartet and percussion

(the other instrument for which Tromp organizes an international competition

and festival, next edition 2010). Master percussionist Colin Currie will

accompany those string quartets who succesfully reach the finals.

There is €44,500 in cash prizes available; the winning quartet will

also be engaged for a series of recitals and have the opportunity to

make a CD recording (made possible by the Friends of Tromp who also host

the participants in their homes during the competition).

The competition is augmented with an exciting festival themed Four & More,

signalling creative collaborations between string quartets and a rich array of soloists.

Emile Wennekes will participate as follows:

Saturday 15 November, 19 hours: meet the artist:

Steve Martland in conversation with Emile Wennekes

Monday 17 November, 20.15: lecture/concert in collaboration with The Doelen Quartet:

It ain't much if it ain't Dutch: string quartets of the Netherlands
